Riccardo Casati is Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Politecnico di Milano, where he conducts research on the behavior of materials during manufacturing processes and in-service conditions, with a particular focus on the development of new materials for additive manufacturing and related post-processing heat treatments.
His academic career at Politecnico di Milano includes appointments as Associate Professor (2018–2025) and Assistant Professor (2015–2018). Previously, he was a Research Fellow at CNR (2005–2006, 2010–2011) and Visiting Scientist at POSTECH (South Korea, 2009) and the University of Melbourne (Australia, 2013).
He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering with honors from Politecnico di Milano, where he also earned his Master’s degree in Materials Engineering and Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his doctoral studies, he was awarded the Acta Materialia Student Award for excellence in scientific research.
He currently serves as a Board Member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (2020–2025), Vice President of the AIM Committee on Powder Metallurgy and Additive Manufacturing, member of the AIM Physical Metallurgy Committee, and member of the EPMI Institute of the European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA).
He is actively involved in the international scientific community as organizer and member of scientific committees for leading conferences such as TMS, EUROMAT, WorldPM, EuroPM, and MSE.
He has coordinated two ESA projects and one PRIN project (Projects of Relevant National Interest), and as Principal Investigator he led the PoliMi unit in three EU-funded projects, five ESA projects, two national projects, and more than 25 industry-funded collaborations. He has conducted experiments at major international research facilities including ESRF, DIAMOND, and ELETTRA.
He is the author of 140+ publications indexed in Scopus (3,700+ citations) and 200+ in Google Scholar (5,000+ citations), and has received six awards for papers published in top-tier journals such as JMST, Advanced Engineering Materials, and IEEE Sensors. He also serves as reviewer for national and international funding agencies, including DFG, SNCF, ANR, SNRF, NCN, and GACR.
